Symbol sequence numbers are useful when tracking a subset of (the broadcast) symbols since they allow one to detect if a lost datagram included any of the tracked symbols. Put another way, one would look for gaps in the symbol sequence number rather than the Msg sequence number to trigger a refresh request. However, the doc for ARCA multicast says:

"Please note that the sequence number while it
increases serially, it does not increase monotonically"

Too bad: this renders the SourceSequence number unusable for this purpose.

It would be a REALLY good idea to include a proper symbol sequence number. It will help you in the long run as it is it would likely reduce the number or repair requests handled by the head end.

There is a typo in the spec, the sequence number does increase serially AND monotonically

Are you sure the Symbol SeqNum increase monotonically? I see gaps (of 1) without losing any packet (msgSeqNum is full).

Can you guys(ARCA) confirm if the symbol sequence numbers increase serially (increment of 1) always. We always see the sequence number jump (most of the time 1 or 2).

Thanks,
Suresh
